Short-term stressors resolve themselves
Remember that short-term stressors resolve themselves once the situation is over.
Every time you discover you are thinking negative thoughts, tell yourself gently but firmly, “Drop it!” then immediately turn your attention to the world around you.
When it happens, notice the negative thinking pattern, label it, and let it float away. Decide to stop dwelling on the idea.
Henry David Thoreau said, “To make a deep mental path we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.” Make a specific plan to change your mind for the better.
To take negative mental habits off autopilot, activate the thinking part of your brain to catch, challenge and override your negative thinking patterns.
When you become aware of your hurtful thinking pattern and its negative effects on you, you can actively and consciously decide to change it.
Decide to become aware of the specific thought pattern that is distressing you. Stop and notice your thoughts. You may notice a particularly persistent thought loop.
Harmful thoughts can easily become habits that stick in your mind. The good news is: you can decide to ease this mental suffering and find more peace of mind.
When dealing with moments of intense stress or feelings, take time out for yourself, do relaxation techniques or exercise. Time out will often help overcome the sense that everything is too much.
Everyone has overwhelming feelings sometimes in life – some more than others. Even if you feel relatively good about yourself things can still temporarily overwhelm you.
