When you’re studying it helps to keep in mind your reasons for doing all this hard work, like a course or career you’re working towards. It can help to have something in your study space to remind you of your goals.
Revising only the night before an exam will stress you out. Instead, revise gradually throughout the term, so you retain what you just learnt in class.
Planning can make the most of your study time: set alarms, use a wall planner, make to-do lists, set time limits – whatever works best for you.
If you study a little bit every day you’ll be continually reviewing things in your mind. This helps you understand things. It also helps you avoid the stress of last-minute cramming.
Some people study better in the morning, others at night. Work out which time suits you and plan to study then. Don’t study much later than your usual bedtime – this can make you too tired to study properly.
The Cornell note-taking method consists of writing full notes in the right-column during class, picking out keywords to put in the left margin, and writing a 5-line summary of the page at the bottom.
Having beautiful notes and a perfectly highlighted textbook doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the information in it. Your only goal is to understand the information so it will stick with you for assignments, tests and life.
There are a few key elements every successful student needs to include in a study plan: time-management, motivation, concentration, asking for help.
You may see studying as something that only gets done at the last minute in a huge overnight cram session. Instead, try setting aside some time every day to study. Summarise each lesson and task when complete – 10 minutes at the end of each session can greatly reduce exam stress later.
